Due to improper handling and storage of fuel used
by the former Soviet Army at Debrecen airport a significant soil and
groundwater contamination has occurred. The task of the environmental survey
and the remediation and damage control of this contamination was given to our
by the local government of Debrecen assigned by the former Ministry of
Environmental Portection and Regional Development (KTM).
The contamination in the airport was not
contiguous, it was divided to several smaller areas. The total polluted area
was about 22 500 m2 and the affected soil volume was more than
10 000 m3.
During the remediation we treated the water
with air-stripping technology and skimming equipment. More than 650 m3
free phase floating hydrocarbon was skimmed, and more than 150 000 m3
groundwater was yielded and purified. Soil treatment was carried out by using
an ex situ enzymatic soil treating method, which resulted in the cleaning of
2800 m3 soil.
During the operation and our survey we used
field gas-chromatograph and vacuum-pumps for groundwater yielding among the
firsts in Hungary.
