The local government of Nyíregyháza was
obligated by a regulation of the Environmental Protection, Nature Protection
and Water Management Inspectorship of the Upper-Tisza Region to remove and
remediate the former damping site located on the eastern outskirts of the city.
According to the assignment given by the local government, first the Zöld
Sziget Konzorcium then our company carried out the remediation. The results of an
environmental survey showed organic (e. g.: TPH, BTEX) and inorganic (e. g.:
arsenic, boron) contaminations in the area of the landfill filled with
different kinds of communal and industrial wastes.

With the elimination of the landfill site with
						an area of 40 000 m2, about 140 000 m3 waste
mixed with soil was picked up, trammeled and removed (868 340 kg
						altogether).

We used a separation tank to skim the free
phase floating hydrocarbons, and air-stripping towers equipped with an
activated carbon filter to get rid of the volatile hydrocarbons in the groundwater.
Then the groundwater was treated with hidrated lime to increase its ph, and
precipitate the toxic heavy metals in the water. The generated sludge was
removed and transported for further treatment. Ultimately we yielded and
treated about 330 000 m3 groundwater which was then placed in
infiltration ditches or was used for irrigation.

The long term treatment of the further residual
contamination was carried out with phytoremediation by planting woody and
						herbaceous plants.
