During the centennial existence of the former
glass factory in Sajószentpéter, industrial wastes, and after the closure of
the factory, illegally other communal and construction wastes were deposited in
its area. There was not any remediation operation carried out before in the
area. Our company was given the task to make an environmental survey, and to
plan the possible remediation operations.
12 sampling borehole was drilled during the
survey, 215 soil and groundwater sample were taken to measure TPH, PAH, water
chemistry, toxic heavy metals, BTEX, phenols in laboratory, and based on the
geological and hydrogeological conditions of the area, a hydraulic model was
created.
After the types of the contaminations, and the
topogrphic conditions were identified and characterized, a three-stage
remediation plan was recommended. First, the establishment of monitoring wells,
and regular groundwater sampling was needed. After that, a phytoremediation is
to be carried out by planting tough, fast growing plants usually used for
energetic purposes. Such plants are like the Koltay-Kopeczky poplar, the
fanpetal (Sida hermaphrodita), the basket willow (Salix viminalis) and the
Siberian elm (Ulmus pumila “Turkestan”).
The third stage is needed only, if the applied
method is not efficient enough or the acceleration of the remediation processes
is needed. In this case drain-ditches and other equipment is to be established
to pump and treat a great amount of polluted groundwater.
