Refpages
More than 50 years ago in the area of the Alba Regia
barrack (belonging to the city of Székesfehérvár) a fuel base was constructed
and used by the army refuel their vehicles and other machinery. The fuel base
consisted of 5 pieces of 50 m3 steel storage tank and the connected
skimming pit, and other engineering structures with 4 well-columns, capable of skimming
350 m3 of fuel.
In 2001, an environmental survey was done in the area by
the assignment of the Ministry of Defense, and a hydrocarbon contamination was
discovered in the soil and groundwater. In 2002 and 2003, modifications and
repairs were made when the refueling station was rebuilt to prevent further
pollution caused by structural, technical errors and malfunctions, thus the
source of the pollution was eliminated.
The mandate to remediate the contamination in the soil
and groundwater was received by the Ökoproject Eger Környezetvédelmi
Kereskedelmi és Szolgáltató Ltd. (Ökoproject Eger Environmental Protection
Commercial and Service Ltd). As a subcontractor, Biocentrum Ltd. was an active
participant in the design, construction and operation of the remediation and
monitoring system, which contributed significantly to the complete elimination
of the contamination.
We used 176 pieces of 7 meters deep vacuum pump
production wells, two vacuum engine rooms, and a three phase water treatment
apparatus, which consisted of a phase separator and a settling unit, and an
air-stripping tower equipped with activated carbon filter to clean the polluted
air.
