In the territory of the AKZO-NOBEL, in Tiszaújváros,
where used to be paint, synthetic resin, solvent and diluent production,
several environmental assessments were carried out in accordance of the
assignments given by the Tisza Vegyi Kombinát Inc. The prior environmental geological
report was prepared by KGI, in the area of a yet to be built 3000 m2
warehouse the survey was carried out by Geohidroterv Ltd., and a bigger-scale
study of the area was prepared by the Földtani kutató és Fúró Ltd. (Geological
Investigation and Drilling Ltd.). The final, more detailed surveys were made by
our company during the planning and establishment phase of the remediation
system.
As a result of the surveys a significant hydrocarbon
contamination was found in two areas in the shallower sandy, gravelly
formations. The contaminations were assumed to be originated from the synthetic
resin factory and the north-eastern part of the tank farm.
Groundwater treatment was carried out with a sand and
emulsion separator tank, air-stripping technology, and a special pump used with
compressed air to skim the floating free phase hydrocarbons. Soil treatment was
accomplished with soil-degassing, and the injection of enzymatic fluids with
the help of injection and air-sparging wells.
During our operations 4 045 062 m3
groundwater was yielded and purified, and more than 60 m3 floating
oil was skimmed. The contamination was completely eliminated, which was confirmed
by the follow-up monitoring as well.
