The environmental survey made by our company in
accordance to the assignment given by Tisza Vegyi Kombinát Ltd. revealed a
significant ph-anomaly in the soil and groundwater in the area of a former
alkaline regenerating plant, which was caused by natron leakage. Because of the
high built-up area and the relatively low territorial expansion of the
contamination, only in situ methods could be used.
The technical intervention we designed for this
case was accepted by the Environmental Protection Inspectorship of
North-Hungary. To reduce the ph and neutralize the alkalnie we used an
air-sparging system to fractionally inject carbon-dioxide into the soil with a
pressure of 3-8 bar. With continuous sampling we could control the
neutralization process till the balance of the neutral ph. As a result of our
operation the initially high (12) was reduced to an acceptable neutral level
(7-8 ph), while the sodium content and the electrical conductivity of the
groundwater was reduced as well.
