In 1998 September, the Bureau of Environmental Protection of the Tisza Vegyi Kombinát Inc. assigned our company to make an environmental assessment in the area of their railway refueling-pumping station to identify possible soil and groundwater contaminations, to estimate their vertical and horizontal expanse, to remediate them and to prepare an environmental risk assessment about the area.
During our survey 29 sampling borehole was drilled and using the samples from the boreholes 118 gas-chromatography measurements were carried out. Using the data a bigger, shallow contaminated area of a 16 500 – 20 000 m2, and several smaller, local (few 10 m2) were identified. In case of benzene, the contamination concentration exceeded 200 times the Hungarian contamination limit “B” (50 μg / l) even in the least polluted areas.
During the remediation 1 556 000 m3 groundwater was yielded and treated, and 216 682 liters of free phase, floating hydrocarbon was skimmed.
